Web Game: Mobsters on MySpace

Posted by JungleBoot on September 26, 2008

This post will be short and to the point.  There are some things I have noticed about the Mobsters application hosted on MySpace you will find useful.

How to make money?
There is no doubt about it.  The best way is to collect bounties.  It’s hard at first.  You don’t have enough mob members or weapons to accomplish the task.  But, you should still try.  The first bounties you should go for are the $8,000 contracts.  This will give you money to build your mob strength.  Eventually, you will need to get gutsy and attempt the bigger bounties — $100K and above.  The goal isn’t to win the fight, but kill the other player.  Here is an example:

Your mob fought with: 65 Minigun, 65 Bulletproof Escalade, 65 Bullet Proof Vest
ANASS’s mob fought with: 80 Armored Truck, 80 Minigun, 80 Bullet Proof Vest
You lost the fight, taking 15 damage and dealing 14 damage to your enemy.
You iced ANASS.
You received a bounty of $79,149,600 for killing ANASS.

I lost the fight and still collected the bounty.  So, work the bounties instead of buying properties.

How do you find the bounties?
You look on the hit list.  Most of the time you will see nothing.  Don’t worry about it.  Start left clicking the refresh button or Hit List button until you see one — then attack.  Sounds lame, but it works.  All you have to do is get lucky with your timing once or twice and you’re on your way.

How do I transfer funds?
Transferring funds only works in two directions — down (a higher level player to lower) or lateral.  You can accomplish a transfer by hit listing a weak opponent.  Just remember everyone else will also try to claim the bounty.   The best way to accomplish this is by weakening your opponent with punches from a higher level player and you must have increased you stamina and health when awarded skill points (stamina: 10/10 health: 200/200).  Those numbers seem to work well.

Why are some hits harder than others?
Some are traps.  There is no way you will beat that person listed.  They have already built up their mob and have the best gear.  These folks are merely padding their stats.  You’ll know when you encounter them.  You get clobbered in every fight.  Plus, they might be sitting there healing themselves as fas as you attack.

How do I find other mobsters when one of my mob is being attacked?
You use that player’s ID.  A great explanation may be found here.

Hurricane Ike: Where are the celebrities?

Posted by JungleBoot on September 21, 2008

Where is Oprah?  Where is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?  Where is Sean Penn?  Where is Chris Rock and all the others that helped after Katrina?  Are we not worthy of their support?  Or is it due to not having enough national media coverage?  Hurricane Ike was no picnic and it left a lot of devestation.  Just thought I would throw this out there.

Hurricane Ike: FEMA Response

Posted by JungleBoot on September 16, 2008

There will always be people not satisfied with the response time of FEMA.  We all want our utilities and comfort returned rapidly.  The fact is a FEMA convoy was parked on I-10 just outside of Katy, TX within 24 hours.  I know.  I saw them with my own eyes as we drove to Sealy, TX for a hot meal at Tony’s Restaurant (Home of the Best Chicken Fried Steak in Austin County).  On our way back, we saw the Texas National Guard exiting I-10 on their way to Tully Stadium.   We saw commercial generators en route to their destination.

The point is help was on the way.  And it takes time to set up such a huge relief effort.  There have been snags along the way.  But, Texas will recover.

Hurricane Ike: Complaining Journalists

Posted by JungleBoot on September 15, 2008

Local and national journalists are upset that they can’t gain access to Bolivar Island and the west end of Galveston.  They feel it is unacceptable to keep them from “showing” the devestation.  My personal opinion is they can’t wait to show “bodies”.  One of the main pushes has been to get an accurate body count.  This has been broadcast sensationalism at its worst.  A group of people who want to report on the pain and suffering of others “first”.  What a horrible job to have.  I don’t know how they sleep at night.  What is wrong with showing some discretion and allowing government officials to release information when they are ready?  I don’t get it.

Hurricane Ike: Lessons Learned

Posted by JungleBoot on September 15, 2008

Search the internet for hurricane preparedness and you will have plenty of results.  There you will also find the typical advice of food, shelter, batteries, and bottled water.  But what about the other things you may not think about?  You know — the little things.

  1. Shelter.  A major hurricane is coming your way and you need a place to stay.  Book in advance.  It’s true the path of a storm is unpredictable.  Still, it’s more important to be safe and protect your family.
  2. Shelter.  The motel you are going to should meet certain guidelines.  This is where time is essential.  Your room should be an interior room or surrounded by other rooms and not on the corner.  Your motel should have a normal roof and not made of designer material (ie: shaped ceramic tiles).  These materials can be blown off and damage your vehicle.  Your room should be up to date on maintenance (ie: are the windows secure? Are there any leaks?)  It’s not cool to find your window can be blown out during a hurricane.
  3. Shelter.  Avoid rooms near garbage dumpsters.  These are often located within an enclosure that has a wooden gate that might become a flying missile.
  4. Shelter.  Ensure your hotel has working washer and dryers or laundry service.

More to come as I rember things that pissed me off this go around.

Hurricane Ike: Bravo Galveston City Manager

Posted by JungleBoot on September 15, 2008

You may not ever get to see this clip, but you should.  During a news conference with media, a media member asked wether or not those covering the aftermath would have access to the food and water being imported to the area.  The Galveston City Manager basically said, “No, bring your own.”  Good for him.  If you want to be there to get your stinking body counts and photos of devestation, you can bring your own food.

Information Technology: Google Chrome and IE 8 beta 2

Posted by JungleBoot on September 5, 2008

Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 have both been released to the wild.  For me, they both stink.  Chrome is a little simplistic and IE 8 b2 annoys me in minor ways.  However, IE 8 b2 is better than Chrome.  The one thing I don’t like about both browsers is each creates two processes.  Why?
