Movies: Star Trek (2009)

Posted by JungleBoot on May 10, 2009

If this is your first Star Trek film, you will be amazed and love it. If you are a long time fan, the film may fall short of your expectations.  You have to get over the idea of a whole new group of actors portraying some of your favorite characters.  You have to be willing to turn the reigns over to a younger generation and let yourself be surprised.  This can be hard.  Especially when William Shatner is our favorite starship captain of them all.  Every young boy wanted to be Captain Kirk.  He got the girls.  He was revered, courageous, fearless, and respected.  The bar set by Mr. Shatner is what alll of the “follow-ons” strove to achieve — with Patrick Stewart being the star pupil.  Sadly, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer were less than compelling.   Without Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, there was no reason to watch ST: Voyager.  The same thing can be said for Jolene Blalock as T’Pol on ST: Enterprise.

My sincerest hope is the movie surprises us all and becomes the top grossing film for the summer.  Why?  I want another Star Trek series.  This movie could be the catalyst.  But, what is there left to do in the Federation?  Even in this film, much of what you see has been done before.  What do you think?  Is there material to explore for a new series?

Movies: Quarantine (2008)

Posted by JungleBoot on March 25, 2009

If you haven’t seen this movie, don’t.  You won’t be missing much.  It is a knock-off of The Blair Witch Project.  The story may be different, but the filming style is identical.  There is a reason these films don’t do well and hit the rental shelf quickly — they suck.  If you saw it at the theater, I’m sorry.  You wasted your money.

Is there anyone out there that has an original idea?  Anyone?  We’re waiting.

Movies: Batman The Dark Knight ( 2008 )

Posted by JungleBoot on July 23, 2008

I don’t know about you but I walked out of the theater a bit drained.  This movie could have been two seperate films.  Still, it was great.  I like that Christian Bale returns as Batman along with Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in their roles.  It feels right when film makers maintain continuity.  However, the big suprise is Joker — Heath Ledger.  Heath Ledger, in my book, finds redemption in his portrayal of the Joker.  The performance was brilliant.  I hope his family will be able to receive an Oscar in his name.  It’s a shame this was his last film.  His career was about to truly take off and recover from Broke Back Mountain.

Movie Review: The Incredible Hulk

Posted by JungleBoot on June 16, 2008

Marvel brings back the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk ( 2008 ) better than expected.  Fans will enjoy the minor tributes paid to original television series cast members Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, and creator Stan Lee.  A small clip of Bill Bixby, Bruce Banner, in Father Knows Best is shown and Mr. Ferrigno portrays a security guard again.  Still looking great for a man who counts Arnold Schwarzenneger, Dave Draper,  and Lee Haney as friends.

My wish, not coming true, would have Eric Bana returning to the role of Bruce Banner.  I think he would have been a better choice — people prefer the original cast in sequals.  However, Edward Norton correctly reflects the modern Bruce Banner — a skinny guy that, when angered, becomes our loveable jolly green giant – The Hulk.  Don’t believe me?  Check it out on the Marvel site.  We can’t have everything we want.

I give the special effects shop high marks on this one.  Detail not seen in the original Hulk, this generation’s Hulk, will be there.  They took the old CGI model and simply made it better with spectacular close-ups on the face and body along with transformations that get your juices flowing.  You’ll even like the stuff done with the antagonist.  It’s awesome.  Kudos guys!!

And it appears to be official, There is an Avengers movie in the works.  Tony Stark shows up at the end with a solution to Gen. Ross’s problem.

“We are thinking about putting a team together,” states Stark.  Gen. Ross then cocks his head like a confused puppy.

Don’t be surprised if the scene appears to be a last minute addition.  It’s really hard to hide it.  Still, it works and leaves you all giddy inside — because you know what’s to come.

WARNING:  The violence has been amped up a bit.  This is not the hulk from the saturday morning cartoons. People get hurt, people die.  The good thing being action is focused on the Hulk and not gruesome death.  I simply want to make you aware the landscape for Comics, and movies based on comic characters,  is changing.  The violence is increasing.

Final note:  I really want to see how Captain America will be re-invented.

Movie Review: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Posted by JungleBoot on May 18, 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008 ****) takes us back to one of our favorite realms of fantasy.  This time the “Kings and Queens of Narnia” are called upon to aid young Prince Caspian in bringing peace to the land.  I give it four stars.  There are some things that  could be done better.  But overall, it’s a good film.

The most delightful character is a mouse that fancies himself as a “knight of Narnia”.  It’s rare a secondary character stands out.   This one does.  He is full of whit and quite charming.

Fair warning:  This movie really is for the kids.  They’ll love it.

Movie Review: Charlie Wilson’s War (2007)

Posted by JungleBoot on May 5, 2008

Charlie Wilson’s War ( 2007 **** ) stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip-Seymour Hoffman. It’s about a Texas congressman (Hanks) who helps the Afghanistan people fight the soviets through covert means.  I really liked this movie.  The witty conversations between Charlie Wilson and Joanne Herring (Roberts) were a joy to watch.  Equally entertaining are the less delicate conversations between Charlie Wilson and Gust Avrakotos (Hoffman).  I could probably watch a whole show centered around Gust.

I give this show 4 stars out of 5.  It addresses an issue that was important to the time without being over dramatic.  Humor is placed conveniently through out to offset uncomfortable scenes like actual footage recorded during Afghanistan’s war with Russia.

Movie Review: Iron Man (2008)

Posted by JungleBoot on May 3, 2008

Iron Man ( 2008 ***** ) stars Robert Downey Jr, Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard, and Gwyneth Paltrow.  This movie gets 5 out of 5 stars for it’s amazing work with CGI.  The Iron Man sequences are out of this world.  I highly recommend this movie to everyone.  If you are a fan of Mavel movies (Spiderman, X-Men, Hulk), you will enjoy Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. will reprise the role of Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk ( 2008 ).  This will be the first Marvel film to use an actor for one role in two separate films.  I expect it to be a minor role.

Movie Review: Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (2007)

Posted by JungleBoot on May 2, 2008

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium ( 2007 ***** ) stars Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Zach Mills, and Jason Bateman.  The story takes place in a magical toy store owned by an eccentric 243 year old man — Mr. Magorium (Hoffman).  His one employee, Molly Mahooney (Portman), feels stuck in life and doesn’t know if she wants to continue working in the store.  However, Mr. Magorium goes about his business of preparing to hand the store over to Molly and hires an accountant, Henry Weston (Bateman), to get his “financials” in order.  What follows is a magical journey of discovery and imagination that the whole family can enjoy.  This movie gets 5 stars out of 5.  I’ts an extremely clean movie and lots of fun to watch.  If your inner child doesn’t come out, then something is wrong with you.

Movie Review – The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007)

Posted by JungleBoot on May 2, 2008

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007 **** ) stars Alex Etel, Ben Chaplin, Emily Watson, David Morrissey, and Brian Cox.  It is a delightful tale about a young boy who finds a strange rock near the loch during WWII.  The boy takes the rock home to later discover an odd creature has emerged from what was really a shell.  What follows is a series of antics and mishaps that leaves the viewer grinning from ear to ear.  I give this movie 4 stars out of 5.

Movie Review: Lions for Lambs (2007)

Posted by JungleBoot on April 30, 2008

Lions for Lambs (2007 *****) brings together an ensemble of stars (Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Michael Pena, Derek Luke, Andrew Garfield, Peter Berg) to talk about an unpopular topic — the War on Terror.  I give this movie 5 stars out of 5 for attempting to be relevant and thought provoking.  The rhetoric delivered isn’t just one sided.  The writers and director worked really hard to illuminate the views of all parties concerned.  It also doesn’t attempt to cover too broad an area.  The conversations, as it is a conversation piece, are between a republican senator and a liberal journalist, a promising student and a liberal professor whose only agenda is to incite the student to action regardless of side chosen, and the unspoken dialog between a commander and his stranded men.  This movie may not be popular today, but someday it will.  It captures, in my opinion, the most prominent topics and problems we face today.  Even if you disagree, it’s worth watching.
